Ingredients
Masoor Dal (red lentils) - 1 cup
Onion - ½ an onion, cut into thin slices
Tomato - 1 large, cut into wedges
Garlic - 2 large pods, cut into slices
Green Chilies - 6, cut down the
centre - reduce to 2 if the chilis are very spicy. Add a dash of chili powder if
you want extra spice.
Turmeric - a pinch. Don’t overdo this – turmeric has a very
strong flavour.
Water - 2 cups
Salt to taste
Chopped cilantro leaves Mustard seeds popped in hot oil. - For garnishing
- Wash the dal and drain well. Add all the ingredients except the cilantro leaves and mustard seeds to the dal. Add two cups of water (can add more if necessary later). Turn stove up to high. When it boils, turn down the heat to simmer, and cover the pot.
- 20 minutes from putting the dal on the stove, it will be done. Use wooden spoon to mash the dal a bit for a nice consistency. Taste for salt and adjust accordingly.
- Garnish with mustard seeds popped in hot oil, and chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves.
- For a healthier version, skip the oil. Garnish with only chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves.
