Ingredients
Beef - 200 gms cut into 1/2" cubes
To marinate the beef
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Ginger-garlic paste - 1/4 tsp
Onion - 1 very small onion cut into slices
Salt to taste
Vegetable oil - 1 tbsp
Onion - 100 gms sliced
Green chillies - 2 cut down the centre
Curry leaves - 6
Ginger-garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
Tomato - 100 gms cut into small pieces
Chilli powder (Kashmiri) - 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Garam masala - 1/8 tsp
Black pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
Cummin powder - 1/8 tsp
Salt to taste
Grated coconut - 1/8 cup
Lime juice - 1 tbsp
Mix together the beef, sliced onions, turmeric, ginger-garlic paste and salt. Stand for a few hours. Can be left in the fridge overnight.
Heat the oil and turn heat down to medium. Add the sliced onions, green chillies and curry leaves.
Sautee on medium heat. Stir frequently. In about five minutes, the onions will start to soften and change in colour, like in the picture below.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sautee for 1 minute.
Turn the heat up to high and add the tomatoes, chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder.
Fry on high heat for 2 minutes, using wooden spoon to mash the tomatoes. The mixture will start to look mushy.
Add the beef and mix well into the curry base.
Sautee on high heat for 8 - 10 minutes. Then add a cup of water and all the remaining powders. Taste for salt and add as required.
Bring to a boil. Cover and turn heat down to simmer. Cook till done. Stir every now and then, making sure that it is not getting burnt and stuck to the bottom of the utensil. After about 45 minutes, uncover, turn up the heat, and cook, stirring constantly, till the dish dries out. This will take about 15 minutes.
While the beef is cooking, roast the coconut in small pan on a low heat till the coconut turns a pale brown. Stir every now and then to prevent excessive browning.
When the beef is done, mix in 1 tbsp of lime juice. Serve and garnish with the roasted coconut.
You may also garnish this dish with chopped coriander leaves. I prefer not to. But it is an option.
NOTE: In order to save time, the marinated beef can be pre-cooked in a pressure cooker. Follow all the steps as above. After adding the cooked beef beef and remaining powders, proceed towards reducing the gravy and drying the dish out.
